I always laugh when I see pictures of people swimming with sharks. Maybe it is my sick sense of humor but it seems absolutely ridiculous to me that anyone would do something that potentially puts them on a menu. There have been some shark issues in Florida this past week...I didn't laugh because to do so would have quickly disclosed the fact that my "mercy" gifts are not very strong...but I was thinking as I saw the video of massive numbers of bull sharks swimming around in the gulf "what were these people thinking?" Like I mentioned above, when you see packs of sharks like that, you might as well put an "eat me" sign around your neck. I don't care if there have only been a few people bitten this year...I've surfed for years and I still don't like it when I see ANY type of fin swim by my board as I'm bobbing up and down in the ocean like a piece of fruit in a chocolate fondue sauce waiting to be tasted. Not a good idea in my book.
Well...this next week, I dive in to swim with the sharks...no, not the ones with teeth that long for a piece of fresh meat but a horde of hungry, passionate and tender young people eager to learn, grow, and be pushed theologically, practically, and holistically toward subversive discipleship/leadership in the Kingdom. Why I do it...I don't know. It has been a burning passion for years...can't get it out of my system. But there is something exhilerating about jumping in and swimming with students who want with all of their heart to make a difference in their world to the glory of God and to the furthering the Kingdom. All I can say is pray for me! The sharks are circling and despite my better judgment, I'm diving in! Seriously, it doesn't get any better than this!
