I'm just reading a few of the thoughts of someone who has become my favorite "irreverent" author, Annie Lamott. Her book, Bird by Bird, has quickly become one that has made it to the top of my pile (to quote a dear bro of mine, Mikie DeVries). Many of you don’t know this…but I am an aspiring writer. I don’t know why I have decided that I’d like to write…my skills with the language suck….my creativity comes in waves (mostly flat)…my sense of humor is a little higher than bathroom jokes but not much…and my wisdom is about as shallow as a bird bath. Even so, I find that I can communicate pretty well when I get a chance to write out some of my thoughts and feelings. Oh well…who knows where this will lead. Back to the story…Annie suggests that as you begin to write, you carry a picture frame in your head and frame the subject or thought that you want to write about. It focuses your attention and gives you an opportunity to concentrate on the details of describing characters, emotions, or insights with more precision and depth. So, I’m walking around today looking for things to frame. Mmmm…let me see…I just finished a small piece of candy called a Nip. Now all of you who are overly PC, back off. I’m not taking a shot at anyone’s ethnic background…seriously, there are candies called “Nips”. Check them out. Anyway, there is something about the taste of something that has a surprise flavor in the middle of it. Let me see…if I frame that, what can I do with it? Mmmm…hidden surprise in the middle…unexpected taste sensation…sweet…lasts about 3 minutes in your mouth. Ok, I’m framing it! Ok! What’s next? Should I start comparing my experience with the Nip to my journey with Jesus? The Church? Well, it’s too easy to get on to the subject of Jesus with this imagery…I mean, it’s like that old joke about the teacher and the picture of the squirrel. Eventually, everything that be answered or attributed to Jesus. That’s too easy. I like the Church idea though…something sweet initially…always a surprise revelation when you get into the middle of it…it’s more than you asked for…the sweetness lasts only about 3 minutes and then its gone. Mmmm…what do you think? Is that too easy of a mark? Oh well…I’m going to work on this framing thing. Maybe the next frame will have something a bit more exciting and readable! Well…before you think your journey to my blog is a complete waste of time, check out the quotes and word of the day that I just added. If you are not entertained, inspired, or ticked off by something I have written, at least you can get an education. All is not lost. I’m off with my frame…more to see! More to come!
